Consider playing chess an art. Have you ever come across anyone saying, they have learnt everything in the process of studying art or literature? It is impossible. The same is with chess. You can master its skills, but you can’t get over learning chess. You learn something new everyday. Beginners have a tendency to constantly learn new things and we agree, any new activity that you pursue can make you curious at the beginning. Which is absolutely fine but you need a mentor to guide you through. You just need to understand how it's all happening.

Before learning complicated actions and tricks, know your basics. Play, Practise and Prepare. But also, know the most commonly made mistakes that could only delay your process of learning. Here, let’s find out what are the five common mistakes that every amateur chess player makes.

5 Biggest Mistakes Made By Chess Beginners

  1. Wasting your moves- Look at the chess board with a clear head. You need to observe and act. Putting across every chess piece can cost you a ”Checkmate”. It might be difficult at first, but once you practise your game well, it would become your habit. Keep a track of yours, as well as your opponent’s moves. This will make you slow but you won’t lose valuable pieces. Improve your defense, before you plan an attack.

  1. Don’t forget your king- Generally, rookies make a mistake of capturing the other player’s pieces and completely forgetting the king. This is a grave mistake in chess. Till you have your king, you are in the game. However, keeping your king guarded doesn’t mean it has to be inactive. It can be helpful to get a grasp of the later part of any game. Safeguard your king but make it valiant.

  1. Don’t underestimate the knights- You might consider them as weak and sacrificing them isn’t going to affect you much. But a knight can make or break a game. There have been scenarios in games where a knight came out strong and saved the king. Of course the king and the queen deserves your undivided attention, but keep an eye on your opponent’s knights.

  1. Playing without a plan- Planning is crucial. You can know the basics of chess through theoretical knowledge from books or watching youtube videos but only a mentor can teach you the relevance of planning along with how to change the plan, if and when in need. Your opponent might figure out your plan if you don’t act tactfully.

  1. Calculating the wrong way- Chess is all about calculations and calculations not just makes you aware of your prospective actions but it also tells you about your opponent’s mistakes. In that case, you can exploit the situation and make way for yourself. Keep your calculation game strong and don’t lose focus. One silly mistake, and your opponent can know it before you could fix it.
