A Rookie can be a master in chess with practice and dedication. It takes years to learn chess and absolute commitment to be better with every passing day. This is the modern chess which we play in a contemporary 8x8 chessboard. However, there are more than 2000 variants of chess in shapes and sizes, even with different rules. Let us find out the most popular variants of chess other than the one we see every day.

The five most popular yet Bizzare Chess Variants

  • The Bughouse Variant- This is one of the most popular kinds of chess. It is very different from the traditional chess that we play today and is mostly played by kids. The rules are as simple as the traditional chess, yet the one big catch is, there are two chess boards involved in it. There are two teams of two players facing each other on two different chess boards. Each team constitutes of one player who plays the white pieces and the other plays the black. The best part is if one of the players in a team captures a piece of the other team, the other player of the same team may/may not use it in his/her board. He/she may put the piece back to his board in an empty square.

  • The Blitz Variant- The blitz variant is also called quick chess. A single player is provided 5 to 15 minutes max as combined to play the game. So together they get half an hour to decide the fate of the game. This is a game where a player can show his quick thinking and strategizing skills.

  • Lightening- You might think this is the same as the Blitz chess, but the fun part it is the total amount of time that is provided to you to make a move is 10 seconds. So in whole, the game must be over by 3 minutes or so. Now you know where the name comes from.

  • Loser’s Chess- you might call it a child’s play but this game requires an equal amount of depth of the subject and planning. The rules are easy and as per the traditional rules of chess, only with one tiny exception. You need to lose to win. Only if you lose all your pieces, you are considered the winner. The king as no special strata and is as similar as the rest of the pieces. If your opponent is in a situation that asks for a capture of a piece, he is bound to do that as per the rules of the game. Whoever loses all their pieces is the winner.

  • Wild Chess- Wild chess is a bizarre version of chess that does not follow regular chess positions, points and rules. The pieces can start from any position they want. It is all about breaking the rules. One such example of wild chess is, suppose the white pieces maintain their usual position. But the black queen and king interchange their position.

These are fun games that intensify the interest of chess in kids. They are fun, flexible and meant to create a different atmosphere for all. While chess is considered all serious, you can have a laugh while playing these games. The same as what Mind Mentorz tries to achieve by not being the best chess training institute but the recreational place that emits smiles and all things nice.
