However, do you know what ELO stands for? The elaboration is Electric Light Orchestra and it is meant to measure the strength of a player in a game against the other players. This records your performance and thus ranks you. But, today we will know how to improve your game and consequently be better than the rest of the players.

How to do it the right way?

  1. Decide your opening moves- Opening moves can make or break your strategy. There are some crucial principles in chess that you might already know. Acknowledging those principles that could convey a strong message to your opponent. If you create an ambience that you know how to proceed, right at the beginning of the game and also grabbing every opportunity to establish that you have a hold over the centre, you are already winning the game.

  1. Take extra care of your valuable pieces- We have all known players who trade their pieces and earn some extra squares. You might think it’s thrilling but you are weakening your game. Don’t give away your pieces for free and only trade pieces of the same value. Your strategy must be to disarm your opponent, keep a close look at his/her pieces, however don’t be hasty, study the board and make a move.

  1. Create strategic positions for your pieces- Simply attacking the king would put you in a bad place. Your opponent may have a better plan to charge your king, keep your pieces in the right position before you plan an attack. Like, the rooks should be at a position where they could move without any hindrance, mind if your bishops could have a clean diagonal line etc.

  1. Backup- It is advisable to always keep backups. Just think about a scenario where one of your pieces is attacking the king, there is a pretty clean chance that your opponent was anticipating you move and could block your way easily. So you always need backups. Another piece backing up your active piece or multiple pieces in their strategic position to defend your opponent's move.

  1. Save the king- Not god, but only you can save your king. Be focused and manage the board skillfully. Don’t miss out on tricks, your opponent can play on you. so, it is best to keep your king under strict security of your pawns. They are responsible to save your king from the direct attack of your opponent.
